Between My Dentist and
Me
by Franko Mandato
March 9th, 2006
"Why do people not know when there breath is bad?"
I asked my dentist one day. He glanced at me over my dental x-rays
and said "Often they are not aware and some just fear coming
to the dentist perhaps for financial reasons..." "No,"
I interrupt "I 'm not talking about those people who cannot
afford services. I meet people who have this problem and they
could afford crowns every week if necessary. No, I am referring
to those guys who have money but ghastly, almost putrid breath."
Now under this was a tiny bit of sarcasm and self-preservation
because this particular dentist has worked on me with strongs
hints of lunch on his breath. Again I reiterate my conversation
with Dr DDS that: it is not unwashed teeth from morning breakfast
that I questioned him about; I wanted to know about the people
who really are unaware of the odor that permeates their mouths
and the air around them.
"Perhaps they just get used to the smell since it probably
comes along slowly developing into full blown dental problems
and the concimitant offensive odor problem." he resounded
with fury. "Concimitant - Whew! Nice word. Yeah I guess that's
it doc." Breath like that slowly creeps upon them and when
we meet or are thrust into encounters the entity is already full
blown and horrific.
"Well. Now that we solved that mystery; whats my damage?"
I asked flippantly. "Two cavities." he said. "What!
Are you #*&@# bleeding kidding me?" I yelled. "Nope,
look right here" he pointed to the xrays "these two
areas. Hey! How come you couldn't smell 'em?" he laughed
as he ushered me out to his hygenist or administrative staff,
I don't know which, as I was in a state of shock.
The appointment was made for my two cavities, I returned and
at that appointment the only conversation went on in my head -
as I discussed what was worse the fact that dear old doc had been
eating peanut brittle and had not brushed before his breathing
into my captivated nose and mouth or the pain of the dental procedure
of filling the holes in my teeth with silver. The bad breath was
worse.
