My First Look at Hawaii

by Franko Mandato
August 4th, 1997

I wanted to write you and let you know that Hawaii was incredible. The place, people and energy there are difficult to describe, but I will say that I have never felt so at peace and at home anywhere on earth.

The resort in which I stayed in Maui was beautiful. Those who live around here claim the ground is sacred since it occupies what is known as the Dragon's Mouth or the Earth's Vortex.

It was a wonderful spot in which two mountain sides came together and up the slope is the location of the resort. Standing on the deck near my room (and also from standing in the Hot Tub) you could view the ocean and this beautiful valley. Also standing there you can feel this revitalizing energy as the Pacific winds blew up from the ocean and your eyes feasted on the surrounding beauty.

I had so many wonderful experiences. I swam with Dolphins and on the last day I met and took a boat ride with John Lily. He is the man who inspired and whose work the movie "Day of the Dolphin" was based. George C. Scott played John Lily. There were a couple that I had met during the week who were planning on getting married on the final day of trip and they had previously invited me. By the time the day was over John was going to be the special guest.

The wedding took place on the beach Kihea (pardon my spelling), on the west side of the island of Maui. It was windy but Katira and Raphael made beautiful music which I and three others danced and portrayed the four winds.

The evening was a very ornate affair at the most exquisite Hawaiian hotel with entertainment and food displays that left me in a swoon at having the luck to be invited and trying to take the whole experience in.

I have not mentioned the watercraft races to blow holes, Lava tube adventures, Seven-layer Waterfalls, Coastal hair-pin ride to Hana, Swimming in Sacred Pools, Cliff Diving, Camping in the Rain Forest, so much more that I can hardly wait to tell you.

Aloha
